Running on empty?

Whew, this last week has been an amazing run of nutrition seminars for me. I consistently feel humbled to be in the presence of some amazing athletes, as well as honored to be able to present my knowledge on Sports Nutrition to groups like USA Track and Field, the Atlanta Track Club, Triple Seven Dance Studio, Sports Factory and many more. I thus wanted my blog for this month to review some of the highlights coming from these athlete interactions. Thanks for the great feedback and compliments. Here is thus […]

NUTRITION FIGHTS SYMPTOMS OF FATIGUE

ILANA KATZ MS, RD, CSSD   One of the most common complaints I hear from friends, clients and co-workers, is that they are all exhausted. Now don’t get me wrong, yes, I am working with many endurance and ultra-endurance athletes who train up to twenty hours per week. One’s knee-jerk reaction is “well, no wonder… all that training” meaning training logically elicits exhaustion, right?  Believe it or not, no wrong – research has shown that physical activity, particularly endurance should generate invigoration (1,2) So why then are we a nation […]

A WEEK IN THE GYM

For my 40th birthday this year, my wife (the dear) purchased a week of personal training at the local health club for me.  Although I am still in great shape since playing on my college football team 25 years ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. Called the club and made my reservations with a personal trainer named Belinda, who identified herself as a 26-year-old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swimwear. My wife seemed pleased with […]

SURVIVING THE TRAVEL CHALLENGE FOR ATHLETES

Ilana Katz MS, RD, CSSD Whether it is for business or for an event, competitive athletes face many challenges associated with travel. An athlete must maintain a regular eating schedule to ensure proper carbohydrate and protein levels, daily vitamin needs, adequate energy and hydration. Travel, however, very frequently disrupts this schedule and exposes the athlete to foreign food and water which may lead to gastrointestinal distress. This article focuses on key points that will help athletes adapt and reduce the nutrition stress of unfamiliarity. Some of these points include planning […]

Ironman Lake Placid 2011 – race report

Hi. I am number 565, but I will have you know, I am more than a number. I am an Ironman! And I loved every minute of the journey getting there… well almost every minute, but never mind, because I don’t think I could add up the latter into more than an hour or two… ok, at max three. Regardless of those darker moments, I had a smile on my face through the whole thing, even into the darkness of the night. Sunday morning, 7/24/2011 : 7:00am anxiety set in. […]

Triathlon–Amelia Island

AMELIA ISLAND 70.3 RACE REPORT Ilana Katz MS, RD, CSSD and 70.3 Finisher again October 15th, 2010… Great way to end a tax quarter… extensions in the mail and on the road to Amelia Island for my 5th 70.3 distance triathlon. Last year it was Augusta Ironman 70.3, not quite my “A” race, but I did have Marine Corps Marathon lurking on the horizon. This year it was Amelia Island as an island (the only one to focus on)… but post stress fracture was the thorn in my side this […]

Stress Fracture – Can you prevent it with Nutrition?

Risk of Stress Fracture in Athletes with inadequate Calcium Intake A Personal reflection! Shin Splints… come on shins, didn’t that fad move out with step aerobics in the 80’s?  Well the pain certainly hasn’t moved on, and my checklist of appropriate solutions has run out. New shoes – check, sports massage – check, nutrition – check… sports doc – check. But left shin pain still persists with every run, and left knee looks like a melon. Ok, last on the list…  stay tuned! Fast forward…  Dr. Sadri (Active Release Technique […]

Triathlete Nutrition Plan: For Your Skin?

As triathletes we are constantly abusing our skin with hours in chlorine filled pools and hours of sweating in the hot sun. We KNOW you are diligent with the sunscreen but what else can you do to protect and improve your skin?

Sports Nutrition for the Winter Olympics– Vancouver 2010

WINTER OLYMPICS As of today, 19 February, the USA is leading in medals. We currently have 18 and the closet rival is Germany with 11 medals total. I say “we” lightly, as many of you who know me personally know that I am very much American, but there is still a huge place in my heart for my Motherland, South Africa.  I watched the opening ceremonies last week, and even though there was only one athlete from “home”, I still have a tear in my eye, as I see the […]
